From Whips to Woodland: Grove Farm’s Tree Planting Update

In 2022 we planted a new Elm tree in Grove Farm donated from Elms4London. The tree is an Ulmus Wingham which is a new hybrid Elm with very high proven resistance to Dutch Elm Disease. As you can see, three years on the tree is growing well and is well established.

History - Elms used to be much more common in London. Apparently, Elm trees were used to create the first pipes that brought piped water into London. Many Elms were lost after Dutch Elm disease arrived in the UK in the late 1960's.

Elms4London who want to bring the Elm back to London through planting disease resistant varieties throughout the 32 London boroughs. You can find out more about the Elms4London initiative at https://lght.ly/ggfff74

The Hazel whips that we planted two years ago are also growing well. We have 16 of the original whips with a third now standing at a meter and a half tall.
