Highlights from Our Autumn Photography Walk
We had a great turnout at Grove Farm Local Nature reserve with 11 participants for this year’s fungi-focused photography session with Nigel Bewley! We believe that the unseasonably dry weather meant there were fewer mushrooms popping up than in previous years, but we still discovered some lovely specimens — including Turkeytail (Trametes versicolor), Scaly Earthball (Scleroderma verrucosum), and Sheathed Woodtuft (Kuehneromyces mutabilis).
To capture the best images, we made sure to get right down to “eye level” with the mushrooms, using brushes and a small air blower to gently clean off the dirt and portable lighting to bring out all the details. These techniques really helped showcase the colours and textures of each species and allowed everyone to experiment with their own photographic style.
The walk lasted about 2 hours and despite a quieter session for fungi, the sense of adventure, the good weather after storm Amy, and the company of fellow enthusiasts made it thoroughly enjoyable. The greatest pleasure always comes from the unexpected finds that make every visit special.
