First Group tree planted

We planted a new Elm tree in Grove Farm at the weekend.

The tree is an Ulmus Wingham which is a new hybrid Elm with very high proven resistance to Dutch Elm Disease.

History - Elms used to be much more common in London. Apparently, Elm trees were used to create the first pipes that brought piped water into London. Many Elms were lost after Dutch Elm disease arrived in the UK in the late 1960's.

This tree was donated to us by Elms4London who want to bring the Elm back to London through planting disease resistant varieties throughout the 32 London boroughs. You can find out more about the Elms4London initiative at
