Conservation day - September 26

26 Sept 2026

From ditch-diving to a meadow in the making 🌿

After our recent sessions opening up a path along Coston’s Brook, our September conservation day took us to another one of our projects, the lower meadow at Grove Farm. This time, the job was to cut back nettles, collect arisings (the cut vegetation) and the creation of brash piles ready for the next stage of establishing the meadow (a multiyear process).

Volunteers from Friends Of Grove Farm Susan, Joe, Paayal and Komal joined goodgym ealing volunteers Scott, Steph and Kash with hedge trimmers, rakes, loppers and forks to make short work of the scrub.

The team worked towards scalloped edges rather than straight lines as nature loves a scallop, while collecting the cutting to create brash piles, located under tree cover to help reduce fire risk.

Next, we hope to sow the cleared area with wild grass and wildflower seed, perhaps even at our next session. Thank you to everyone who helped to care for Grove Farm and keep its welcoming for wildlife and visitors.

🌱 Join us for a future conservation session, email us to find out more.
