Conservation day - Scrub clearance at the top of the lane

27 Sept 2025

From Brambles to Beauty – Volunteers at Work

On Saturday, our amazing Friends of Grove Farm volunteers — Deborah, Fred and Sue — teamed up with the brilliant crew from GoodGym Ealing (Steph, Sevan, Kash and Afshin) for another busy conservation day at Grove Farm Nature Reserve 🌿💚.

This time, the hard work took us to the top of David Lloyd Lane near Sudbury Hill station, where brambles had once again taken over. Armed with loppers, rakes (and plenty of energy), we cleared the patch back to ready for next year.

Not only did we tackle the brambles, but we also removed 5 full bags of rubbish and 3 bags of recyclables ♻️ — including some unusual “finds” like stray cereal boxes well past their best-before date!

Bags collected from the site.

Huge thanks to everyone who came along, including our partners at GoodGym Ealing, whose energy always makes these days fun and rewarding. Together, we’re keeping this special local nature reserve cared for and thriving 🌱🌸.

After working through the top of the lane, we focused on clearing more of the rubbish from along the lane as well as finding some Calvatia gigantea, commonly known in English as the giant puffball mushrooms.
